Thermographic Surveys

At Melin Energy Consultants, we provide professional thermographic surveys designed to give you clear insight into your building’s thermal performance. With our UKTA Level 2 certified surveyors operating nationwide, we carefully identify defects, verify construction quality, and ensure compliance with BREEAM and wider energy performance standards.

Whether you are working on a new build or a refurbishment, our expert team delivers accurate, evidence-based results. Consequently, you can address hidden issues before handover, improve energy efficiency, and gain confidence that your building performs as intended. What Is a Thermographic Survey?

Thermographic surveys capture infrared images of building surfaces to detect temperature variations that may indicate:

  • Heat loss through walls, roofs, and floors

  • Missing or poorly installed insulation

  • Thermal bridging

  • Unintended air leakage paths

The survey provides visual, verifiable evidence that a building has been constructed in line with its design intent.

BREEAM Thermography & Compliance

Our surveys are recognised under BREEAM New Construction and BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment schemes. Credits can be achieved under the Man 04 commissioning and handover section.

  • Surveys conducted by UKTA Level 2 thermographic surveyors

  • Reports produced in accordance with BS EN 13187

  • Evidence supports energy performance verification and compliance

When Is A Thermographic Survey Carried Out?

Thermographic surveys are typically carried out once the building envelope is complete and heating systems are operational.  However, to ensure reliable results, surveys require suitable environmental conditions, for example:

  • A minimum internal-to-external temperature difference of 10°C

  • Dry weather with low wind speeds

  • Minimal solar influence on external surfaces

These conditions are important because they allow our infrared cameras to accurately detect heat loss, insulation gaps, and unintended air leakage without interference from external factors.

What Will The Survey Confirm?

Our inspections can confirm:

  • Insulation continuity across walls, roofs, floors, and junctions

  • Identification of thermal bridges that cause heat loss

  • Unintended air leakage paths

  • Overall thermal integrity of the building envelope

  • Effectiveness of installed insulation and heating systems

  • Areas of energy inefficiency that could increase running costs

  • Compliance with BREEAM and energy performance standards

By detecting hidden defects that may not be visible to the naked eye, our surveys allow contractors to carry out targeted remedial works before handover.

Our Survey Process

  1. Review drawings and specifications to understand risk areas

  2. Site inspection using calibrated infrared cameras

  3. Analysis of thermograms to detect issues

  4. Detailed report with annotated images and practical recommendations
